With the 150-Year Anniversary of Bricklayers and Allied Craftworkers Union this year, we celebrate not only a holiday but the recognition of our organized trades. BAC is the oldest, continuous construction union in the United States today. As working families enjoy a day off, let’s also take a moment to understand, recognize and appreciate the struggles that union members faced in the past and the rights this holiday reinforces.

What’s wrong with this picture? The picture above is a prime example of disregard for job safety. No, this is not a UNION contractor and yes, this contractor was reported to and investigated by Cal-OSHA. Can you identify the safety violations in this photograph? Hint: Cal OSHA saw (4) four.

The Western States Regional Apprenticeship Contest was held on June 6th in Arcadia California hosted by BAC Local 4. The BAC Western Region is the only Region left in the United States to hold this event every year. In fact, the contest has been ongoing since 1963. BAC Local 3 had five apprentices compete.

On April 25th BAC and the Tile Apprenticeship held its Local Tile Contest to determine who would be representing BAC LOCAL 3 in this year’s Western States Regional Contest. Here is a little write up on what the tile project consisted of and the winners, as well as those who helped and worked hard to make this year’s competition a great success.

Work continues to improve throughout our jurisdiction. The first week of April’s out of work lists for all our crafts are fewer than 10; except for bricklayers, which should bounce back soon. This is a very busy time; many members who left during the recession are making their way back.
