From the Desk of Tony Santos:

What is Organizing?

Organizing is going out pounding the pavement, telling nonunion guys that are working for $10 bucks per hour, with no insurance or pension, what they could be earning. It’s also getting the contractor on board so they can take advantage of using well trained union craftsmen. As well as being eligible for most prevailing wage jobs.

Why Organize?

In order to be successful Local 3’s market share must be expanded to increase work opportunities. There must also be a big push on expanding the number of contractors signed to our agreement and protecting B.A.C. trade jurisdictions. Support available at Local level, includes involvement with Building Trades, Central Labor Councils and community based organizations. Advancing the labor movement into something huge is a goal that can be achieved. It can create more opportunities for working people and increase political clout for unions.

Hopefully this will help you to understand the importance of organizing. Some people believe organizing may hurt their chances at a job. It’s just the opposite. More union contractors mean more union craftsmen. There are ways you can help your own cause. Next time you come across someone doing your same work, take a few minutes and let them know what they could be earning. They will talk to their coworkers in a short time word starts to spread and that’s our opening. Remember more union contractors’ equal more union work.

I’d like close by saying in advance, Happy Holidays to all my Union Brothers and Sisters.
