On Saturday April 12, the local Bricklayer and PCC apprentice contest was held at the Pleasanton school. Brick apprentices competed for a chance to represent BAC 3 CA in the 2008 Western States Brick and Tile Contest to be held in San Diego on May 31.

Congratulations to 1st place winner Justin Jones, who also won last year, 2nd place winner Santos Mijangos, 3rd place winner Jose Miguel Morales in the brick contest. Thank you to all the contestants, all apprentices who helped with the contest, Brick Apprenticeship Coordinator Michael Height, Judges Ed Birmingham, Derek Piper, and Tyler Simpson and BAC 3 staff for providing lunch. Contestants who met all requirements to compete on May 31 include Joel Lopez, Kenneth Jones, Marcelo Lopez, Kristian Trotter, Daniel Gonzalez, Sean Pengilly, and Jacob Cobb. Good Luck at the Western States Contest.

Congratulations to 1st place winner Tomas Ramirez, 2nd place winner Hector Cortez, 3rd place winner David Penney in the PCC contest. Thank you to all the contestants, all apprentices who helped with the contest, and all the PCC Instructors for a job well done.

Congratulations to all Bricklayer, PCC, Marble Mason and Finisher apprentices that graduated from 3-1-07 to 3-1-08. The following newly Certified Journeymen attended the contest and were presented jackets from the Brick 3 Joint Apprenticeship, Training and Education Committee;

Bricklayers Jarrod Tyler, William Phillips, Joshua Height, Daniel Voolstra, and Warren Cheatham. PCC’s Arvel Nelson, Rigoberto Florean-Cruz, Travis McManus, Jaime Rodriguez, Rafael Castorena, Jose Barreras, Efrain Tapia, Hector Salcedo, Sidi Qadiri, and Norbert Diedrick. Marble Finisher Alfonso Herrera.

Brick agreement negotiations were discussed at the General Membership meeting on May 3, 2008. Negotiations will start in May and progress will be discussed at local Chapter meetings in June. Terrazzo agreement negotiations will also open in May. We will also address allocations of wage and benefit increases for PCC, Refractory, and Marble Mason and Finisher at the June Chapter meetings. New t-shirts will be available at Chapter meetings to members who have not yet received them.

BAC 3’s 8th Annual Picnic will be held at Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo on Saturday, July 26th, 2008. You should have received the flyer in the mail by the time this newsletter reaches you. Please return all ticket orders to the office by the deadline of Friday, July 4th, 2008 so we can get an accurate count to the park. Hope to see you there!

Check out the calendar at the top of the page for meeting information, we have 7 chapter meetings every month, if you have not attended one in a while, please make an effort to show up at least once this year. It’s a great place to meet your representatives, and network with other members. Please note the change of day and time for the San Francisco meeting.

Important Dues Information - Please be aware that BAC Local 3 no longer accepts cash for dues or initiations. All payments must be by check, money order, Visa or Master Card.
Out of Work List - All BAC working members please remember to call the Hall at 1-800-281-8781 whenever you’re out of work to be put on the out of work list. This is important, especially, for one who is collecting unemployment benefits, or on self-pay. To qualify for self-pay, your name must be on the Union’s out of work list during the time period you are not working. Weekly check in must be done before noon on Mondays. Lists are updated every Monday after noon; and then distributed to all Field Reps.
Allied Administrators should be notified at 1-888-877-8363 if you have a change in your martial status or have a child. New dependents must be added within 30 days of qualifying event (marriage, divorce, birth or adoption of a child.)
