In last month’s article, we let you know about J.W. Knapen’s story and the construction of the JW House. Although this is a large project, donating our labor for this good cause is the right thing to do and will benefit the South Bay community for many years to come.

On Saturday April 5, the local Tilelayer apprentice contest was held at the Hayward school. Eligible apprentices competed for three spots and an alternate spot to represent BAC 3 CA in the 2008 Western States Brick and Tile Contest to be held in San Diego on May 31.
Congratulations to 1st place winner Fernando Barajas, 2nd place winner Kenny Webster, 3rd place winner Joshua Pudlak, 4th place winner, alternate Mike Mitzel. Thank you to all the contestants, all apprentices who helped with the contest, Tile Apprentice Coordinator Lupe Ortiz, Judges Jim Bare, Ben Spear, Rick Papapietro and BAC 3 staff for providing lunch. Thanks to Clayton Peck from Custom Building Products for donating prizes to the winners and Stan Young at the Tile Setters Toy Store for donating equipment and a discount on materials.
Congratulations to all Tilelayer and Tile Finisher apprentices that graduated from 3-1-07 to 3-1-08. The following newly Certified Journeymen attended the contest and were presented jackets from the NCTI Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee;
